The Beginning: Embarking on the Ultimate Golf Road Trip
There comes a time in every golfer’s life when the fairways of their local club no longer suffice, and the call of distant greens becomes irresistible. For me, that time came after hanging up my 9-to-5 hat for good. Fueled by years of daydreams, I set out from Los Angeles, aiming to traverse the vast stretches of the United States with one goal: to play the nation’s most iconic golf courses.
Across the Heartland: Kansas and the Mighty Mississippi
Our journey took us through the heartland of America. Passing through the geological center of the U.S. in Kansas—a humble reminder of just how vast this country is. As we crossed the mighty Mississippi River, I felt a surge of excitement. This wasn’t just a trip; it was a pilgrimage through the very veins of America.
A King’s Breakfast: Memphis’s Historic Arcade Restaurant
In Memphis, we indulged in a bit of Americana at the Arcade Restaurant, a favorite haunt of Elvis Presley. Sitting in the booth where the King regularly sit, I ordered Elvis’s breakfast. Despite not living up to my expectations and opting for something else, the experience was surreal, adding a rich layer of history to our golfing adventure.
Golfing Highlights: From TPC Southwind to East Lake
The golfing experiences were nothing short of spectacular. At TPC Southwind, we tackled the challenges of a PGA Tour course, navigating its water hazards and bunkers with a mix of awe and determination. Another memorable moment was at East Lake, where we walked in the shadows of giants like Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods, even peeking inside the champions’ locker.
Payne’s Valley: The 19th Wonder of the World
Perhaps the most breathtaking was Payne’s Valley, renowned for its stunning 19th hole—Big Rock at Payne’s Valley. Here, amidst the natural beauty, we decided the fate of our friendly wagers with a “double or nothing” shot over 110 yards. Landing my ball on the postage island green, I secured my winnings, a moment of personal triumph against the backdrop of the Ozarks.
Pinehurst No. 2: Walking in Legends’ Footsteps
Our journey culminated at Pinehurst No. 2, a course steeped in golfing lore. Standing beside Payne Stewart’s statue and recreating his iconic 1999 U.S. Open victory putt on the 18th green was surreal. With a gallery in the front porch of the clubhouse, I sank my 15-foot putt on the 18th green to save Par—a fitting end to a dream journey.
Reflections on a Golfer’s Odyssey
To date, my heart is still full of stories, and my mind replays every drive, chip, and putt. This road trip wasn’t just about playing golf; it was about connecting with the spirit of the game and the country that has given it so much character. From the bustling cities to serene landscapes, and from historic diners to legendary greens, it was truly a bucket-list journey that transformed our love for golf into an unforgettable adventure.
